The Guna: History and Tradition in the San Blas Archipelago
Guna, pronounced “Kuna” although spelled “Guna”, is the name of the indigenous people who inhabit the San Blas ArchipelagoIn Panama. No one knows exactly when they arrived from South America or the Caribbean, but by the 16th century they had already occupied the 365 islands we know today as San Blas. They were pushed to the Caribbean coast by enemy tribes and Spanish conquistadors. Currently, the Guna live mainly on the San Blas islands, as well as in the Chucunaque and Bayano rainforests.

The Guna Resistance and Culture
The Guna people have fought for centuries to preserve their culture and traditions. During the colonial era, they allied themselves with European privateers and pirates to defend themselves against the Spanish, who had threatened to exterminate them. Over time, they settled in the region that today corresponds to Darién and San Blas in Panama, and in western Colombia, achieving legal recognition of their lands toward the end of the 19th century.
The Guna Revolution
In 1925, historical grievances led the Guna people to declare independence from Panama, creating the "Republic of Tule," thanks to the impetus of Canadian adventurer Richard O. Marsh. Following a peace treaty, the Guna recognized Panamanian sovereignty while retaining considerable autonomy. Today, Panamanian authorities respect the Guna government, establishing three special "comarcas" (regions). Their political system is one of the most advanced among the indigenous peoples of Latin America.
La Mola: Art and Tradition
One of the most recognized symbols of Guna culture is the lordThe Guna women wear a garment made with reverse appliqué techniques that combine layers of fabric and intricate designs. They also paint their faces with achiote, wear nose rings, and wear their traditional skirts and blouses, while the men combine their Guna shirts with modern trousers.
